May is a great month to apply for scholarships. Each year, many organizations provide scholarships to students of any age who demonstrate academic excellence and financial need. For example, the May 1st deadline for The Coca-Cola Scholars Program allows high school seniors in the United States with academic potential, leadership skills, and community involvement to receive up to $20,000 in college scholarships. Other organizations offering May scholarships include the Gates Millennium Scholars Program, Fastweb Scholarship Database and The National Black Nurses Association. For students looking to cover their tuition costs or financial needs, applying for a scholarship in May can be an advantageous way to get funding for post-secondary education.

Cost of College in May

The cost of college can vary greatly depending on each school. According to the College Board, the average cost of tuition and fees for a four-year public college was $10,440 in 2018–19 while private not-for-profit colleges charged an average of $36,880 per year. The most affordable schools are St Petersburg College in Florida with an annual tuition of $1,744; Montana State University-Northern with an annual tuition of $3,445, and Arkansas' South Arkansas Community College with a cost of $3,588.

These three schools offer some of the lowest tuition rates in the country. In addition to tuition and fees associated with attending college, students must also consider living expenses such as room and board, books and supplies, transportation, and personal expenses. While the cost of college may seem daunting at first glance, there are various ways to make it more affordable such as scholarships, grants, work-study programs, and loans. By doing research and exploring all of your options when it comes to financing college expenses you can minimize the amount of debt you take on while still allowing yourself to pursue a higher education.
