About Scholarships For Women

Women are increasingly outnumbering males in enrolling in a university and also in completing their education. They make up around 59% of the total undergraduate enrolment. This is one of the reasons why women are more in debt in terms of student loans than their male counterparts. They are also increasingly populating the STEM workforce and have gone up from 8% of the total STEM workers in the year 1970 to 27% in 2019.

However, in spite of more women getting degrees than males and more of them completing their education, women are still facing the gender gap. Many of them still get lower wages than males in many occupations, which is why they have a hard time repaying the student debt that they have accumulated.

Scholarships for women can help women complete their education with much less debt. It can help them pursue the career they want at an institution of their choice. Scholaroo provides a list of at least 90 scholarships available to women to help them with their education goals. Some of the scholarships listed are catered to those with entrepreneurial and leadership skills, other scholarships reward female students pursuing their undergraduate or postgraduate studies in science programs or advanced degree programs. Many scholarships are available to women pursuing a degree in STEM specifically. There are also options for returning female students across all educational levels.

What to consider when applying for women scholarships

Whenever looking for the best scholarship for women, always make sure to read thoroughly its description and eligibility criteria. Scholarships for women in STEM 2023

Women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) are making waves in the technological world. Despite facing challenges such as gender bias and lack of opportunities, women are now breaking barriers and becoming successful entrepreneurs, scientists, engineers, and mathematicians. They have made breakthroughs in fields such as computer science, biotechnology, and nanotechnology that could have a major impact on our lives. With more support from society for female professionals in STEM fields, we can expect to see even greater achievements from talented individuals.

Many organizations are working to bridge the gender gap by providing mentorship programs for women. These initiatives often offer support and guidance for women facing technical or other challenges, as well as opportunities to network with established industry professionals. Women and student loans

Women hold more than half of the student debt, around 58% of the total because they take more student loans than men, to begin with. Their debt is 9.6% higher than men's when calculated after a year of graduation and to pay it off, they end up taking two extra years when compared to males. Black women owe the highest debt on average.

There are a few major reasons why women hold more debt than men. Firstly, women actually complete their degrees and opt for further education whereas men generally don’t. The amounts that women take out per loan are generally also more than men. Moreover, women have a higher enrollment rate at for-profit colleges which are more expensive than public colleges.

Another issue that aggravates the loan situation is the gender pay gap. Females generally earn lower wages than men. This not only makes it difficult to pay for tuition but also makes it harder for them to repay the debt later on.

Why do women need scholarships?

Women earn less than men in most cases which is why they might need scholarships more. There are many reasons why there is still an income gap between the two genders.
Different industries. Men and women generally work in very different sectors. The occupations that women generally opt for pay lower than those occupations which men dominate. Over time, this occupational segregation is reducing and more and more women are opting for male-oriented jobs and men are opting for those jobs that were traditionally occupied by women only. However, we still have a long way to go to fully close this gap and experience equality.
Differences in hours worked. Women are more likely to work fewer hours and go part-time. This is because they are the ones usually responsible for unpaid caregiving obligations at home. This results in lower wages and fewer benefits too.
Discrimination. Females are still facing gender discrimination in many parts of the world and are being paid less for the same jobs that men do. Then, when they change jobs, their salaries are set to their previous pay which is how the discrimination follows from one job to another too and they are continued to be paid less.

Most Common Majors For Women

There are some majors that women tend to opt for more than men. You can find scholarships here catering to those specific majors too.

Majors that are commonly chosen include a wide array of subjects covering different areas. The most common majors that women take up in post-secondary education include nursing, health professions, liberal arts, sciences, humanities, general studies, psychology, business, management, marketing, and related support services. Other majors such as engineering are mostly dominated by men but over the last few years, more and more women are opting to study in these fields. Many scholarships also encourage women to pursue majors, like engineering, that were previously dominated by men.

No matter what women opt for, the long list of scholarships provided here will help them pursue the major of their choice.

Can scholarships for women help reduce the gender gap?

Scholarships can help women attain their higher education goals in various fields that were previously dominated by men, such as STEM. There are more scholarships too that are now offered to women who opt for traditionally male-dominated fields to help close the gap. This way, women will be able to get hired at better positions that pay well. Moreover, with more scholarships, they will be able to cover more of their tuition and the associated costs with the scholarship money. This will reduce the overall debt that they have to take.
