New Mexico is a diverse state with various ethnic and racial backgrounds. Nearly half the population is made up of minority groups, with Hispanics representing 47%, Native Americans comprising 11%, African Americans at 3%, and Asians at 1%. While the state has a rich cultural heritage because of this diversity, minorities still face systemic challenges due to poverty rates which are higher than average for the state. There are also disparities in access to education and healthcare services. To help address this lack of access, there are several scholarships available to help underprivileged minority students access higher education. They provide much-needed financial support and can be used to cover tuition costs as well as other expenses associated with college such as books, housing, and transportation. These scholarships and programs can help make education and thereby a successful career more accessible to those who face these systemic challenges.
