The DE NAHRO Institute supports students living with affordable housing defined as Project-Based Section 8, Rural Development Section 515, Housing Choice Vouchers, Low Income Housing Tax Credit (L.I.H.T.C.), Public Housing, Habitat for Humanity Home, Self Help Homeownership Program, or U.S.D.A. Rural Development Homeownership Program. The scholarship grants one high school student looking to complete a two- to four-year undergraduate degree after graduation. The scholarship is awarded to a student enrolled at a high school in Delaware.

Applicants are expected to achieve a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.5 and provide an academic transcript confirming these marks. Two letters of recommendation, one from a high lecturer and another from a leader in the community, are needed for the application. Applicants are required to submit an essay of 500 words responding to the prompt provided by the scholarship.

DE NAHRO Board of Directors creates a subcommittee with the sole purpose of choosing the awardee. The scholarship winner will have the chance to apply for additional funding each year (up to three more years) as long as the required criteria are met. The purpose of the scholarship is to contribute toward the growth and development of families residing in affordable living homes within Delaware.

When applying for the scholarship, ensure you live within one of the affordable housing units identified by DE NAHRO. Applicants, who do not provide evidence of residing in one of these units, will not be considered for the scholarship.

The application you submit heavily relies on your academic performance. Make sure you work hard and achieve the best grades possible to provide an edge against other applicants.

Take part in extracurricular activities

Applicants, who perform well and are committed to extra-curricular activities, have a greater chance of being awarded the scholarship. Focus on activities you do well in and provide evidence of your participation in these activities; awarded medals or acknowledgment from the school work well in your favor.

Read through the essay question carefully

The essay you submit is worth 40% of the overall application; ensure you carefully read through the essay question and formulate a concise response. Brainstorm, draft and receive peer reviews of your essay before you submit it. This will provide you with the necessary feedback that enables you to submit a well-rounded piece.

How the DE NAHRO Scholarship Assistance Program is Judged

The DE NAHRO Board of Directors forms a subcommittee with the sole task of administering the scholarship program. Judging is spread as 60% based on the written application (academic performance etc.) and 40% based on the submitted essay.
