North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority (NCEAA) continues to support families across North Carolina to get their children into public schools with its NC Opportunity Scholarship. The program is income-based and can provide the financial support needed up until high school graduation. The program aims to expand school choice through scholarship grants for eligible children in kindergarten through 12th grade.
This year, more than 25,000 N.C. students have won the NC Opportunity Scholarships to attend 544 private schools. The state awarded more than $133 million in scholarships for the 2022-23 academic year, according to data from the N.C. State Education Assistance Authority. Each winner will receive from $2,100 to $6,492 for the next school year.
Eligible families must be residents of North Carolina and meet the income requirements listed on the scholarship information website. Household income cannot exceed $263,144 in order to receive 90% of the required tuition fees. Applying children must be at least 5 years old by August 31 or at least 4 by April 16 and approved for kindergarten according to State guidelines.

Confirm that you must meet the requirements
Your family's annual income must meet the income requirements as stated in the scholarship guidelines and be within the range of $72,964 to $263,144. You must also provide the tuition fees of the school you want to apply to. Have your records organized and ready before the deadline. Your child should be at least 4 years old by April 16 or 5 years old by August 31.

As per the guidelines, create an account for your child on the scholarship website. The page will guide you through all stages until you submit your application. Through MyPortal, you will be able to apply, receive notifications, and amend school choices. There is also a checklist available for you do not miss any dates or requirements.

Those entering college are ineligible
This program doesn’t cover college or undergraduate programs.
It is renewable
The program is renewable until the 12th grade as long as requirements are met.
It has a priority window
Applications received between 2/1 and 3/1 February will be prioritized and will receive first-round awards in April.
