Monroe Scheflo was born and bred in Newburg, North Dakota. He completed his high school education in Newburg. In 1964, Monroe acquired a degree from Minot State College. After he graduated from college, he worked as a teacher before he ventured into farming in 1975. After a few years, he, unfortunately, died of cancer at the young age of 43.
As an active member of the U.S. Durum Growers Association, before his death, the organization through the North Dakota Community Foundation established a scholarship fund (Monroe Scheflo Memorial) in his memory.
Each year, the Monroe Scheflo Memorial is offered to a student from North Dakota or a Durum-producing state currently enrolled full-time and majoring in agriculture at an accredited school in the United States. The value of the scholarship award is $1,000. It will be directed towards the recipient’s tuition.
