The scholarship is an initiative of the Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) at the Maryland Higher Education Commission (MHEC). MHEC is an administrative board in Maryland that is responsible for managing public and private colleges and universities in the state. With the governance of MHEC, the scholarship program aims to provide financial aid to students who have demonstrated financial need.

To be eligible for the scholarship you must be a resident of Maryland. Applicants must be enrolled in a degree program on either a part-time or full-time basis. Eligible institutions for the scholarship program include the University of Maryland, Baltimore (UMB), the University of Baltimore School of Law, Johns Hopkins University, and Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine.

The winning scholarship entry is awarded an amount between $1,000 and $5,000. This award money is sent directly to the institution in which the recipient is enrolled. The funds can be used to cater for tuition, fees, room and board, and other educational expenses.

The Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) has given each of the recipients‘ institutions the mandate to decide whether the students’ scholarships are subject to renewal.

Each institution answers to OSFA

By August 15 each year, all the participating institutions are required to report to the Office of Student Financial Assistance(OSFA) on how they allocated the appropriated funds.

Recipients can withdraw from the scholarship

A student may appeal to stop their scholarship if they are in a position to settle their tuition fees and other educational-related expenses.
