The Maine Water Company is a regulated public water utility that serves 80,000 customers across Maine State. The Company maintains the Maine Water Utilities Fund to encourage and promote the pursuit of a career in Maine’s water and wastewater profession. The Judy Wallingford Scholarship is one of two $1,000 scholarships awarded by the fund.

Students in a university or college program related to the water works profession or considered beneficial to water resource management in Maine may apply for the scholarship. Applicants must be pursuing a career focused on the protection and sustainable use of natural water resources. Eligible applicants may receive an award of at least $1,000, however, the amount and number vary annually as funding allows.

The Scholarship is awarded based on merit, character, and need, regardless of the field of study. The award is a one-time payment and non-renewable. Preference is given to female candidates.

How the Judy Wallingford Scholarship is Judged

The Maine Water Utilities Scholarship Fund Committee selects recipients based on their interest in pursuing a career in the water works profession and the protection and sustainable use of natural water resources. This is demonstrated by the secondary program in which the applicant is enrolled. Candidates are also evaluated based on merit, character, and level of financial need, regardless of their program of choice. The Committee gives preference to female candidates in honor of Judy Wallingford, after whom the scholarship is named. Applicants are also evaluated on their academic strengths, extracurricular and community service activities, jobs held within the last two years prior to their application, an essay, and one or more letters of application. Recipients of the award receive a one-time stipend after successful completion of the first semester at an undergraduate institution.
