United Negro College Fund
The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) is the largest and most effective minority education organization. The UNCF supports under-represented students to enroll in college, persist to graduation, and become highly-qualified college graduates. Every year, the UNCF awards more than $100,000 to students through a variety of scholarships.
The scholarship is awarded by the Estate of Edna M. Blum. The Edna M. Blum Endowed Scholarship is awarded to eligible US citizens or permanent residents from the NYC area. Depending on the proven level of financial need, successful applicants can receive an award of up to $5,000.
Full-time African American undergraduate students enrolled in an accredited university or college in the United States are eligible for the scholarship. The one-time award is disbursed to eligible students to attend four-year colleges or universities. Candidates must submit one unofficial transcript, a 400–500-word essay, and verification of financial need from the attending university or college.

How the Edna Blum Scholarship for NY Residents is Judged
Eligible applicants will be assessed on their academic achievements, leadership, community service, and employment experience. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 on a 4-point scale. A 400–500-word essay submitted as part of the application is assessed on its accuracy in describing how the applicant’s neighborhood defines them and how the applicant’s career goals will support them in giving back to the community. Successful candidates receive the disbursement in November shortly after the deadline.
