The scholarship is funded by the Alabama College Education Savings Program established by Alabama law. The program targets high school seniors or first-time college freshmen starting school in the fall of the year the scholarship is awarded. As an applicant, you must demonstrate financial need, have a GPA of 2.75 or more, and an ACT score of 26 or below. Each year, about 195 deserving students are awarded the scholarship.

The winners are awarded a sum of $4,000 if they are enrolled in a four-year college and $2,000 if they are enrolled in a two-year college. This prize money can be used for education-related expenses such as tuition, fees, computers, books, and supplies.
