The TN Higher Education Commission and Student Assistance Corporation administers the Minority Teaching Fellows Program. The goal is to entice brilliant minority Tennesseans to work as teachers in their home state. Undergraduate and graduate students, pursuing teacher certification at an approved Tennessee college or university, are eligible for this scholarship.

The Tennessee Minority Teaching Fellows Program offers a full-time undergraduate student a $5,000 scholarship, each year, to engage in teacher-preparation courses. Applicants can be a college junior, senior, or graduate student.

The Minority Teaching Fellows Program gives high-achieving students chances for lifelong enrichment and introduces them to fresh viewpoints and experiences. Evaluation is based on a 250-word essay, grade transcripts, and recommendation letters.

Candidates must be either full-time undergraduate students engaged in courses leading to teacher certification or graduate students enrolled in at least part-time courses leading to teacher certification. Ensure at the time of application you qualify as one.

Carefully choose the experiences for your application that best demonstrate your leadership and volunteerism. Extracurricular activities and community engagements are always a plus on your application and résumé.

Cultivate academic excellence

A minimum GPA of 2.5 is advised. Make sure your academic transcripts and résumé are in perfect condition because you will need to submit them. To continue to be eligible, the recipient must maintain a cumulative GPA of 2.5 or above and enroll full-time.

5 Facts About Tennessee Minority Teaching Fellows Program

The award is renewable for subsequent years

Awards are made in equal installments each term throughout the academic year. The grant is valid for three additional renewals for a total of four years.

Restricted to minorities

While it is only available to minorities in Tennessee, it achieves its goal of encouraging young minority students to enter the teaching field.

Geographically restricted

Candidates must be citizens of the United States and residents of Tennessee who identify as a minority.

A signed promissory note required

Those who accept the prize are required to sign a promissory note, which binds them to teach PreK–12 for one year for every year they win the honor in a public school in Tennessee.

05.

Recipients pay back upon failing to meet obligations of promissory note

In the event that the recipient does not finish the course of study or does not work at an eligible Pre-K through 12-year-old school, repayment will start.
