The Minnesota Office of Higher Education is committed to equipping students in the state with the knowledge and financial support they need to pursue post-secondary education. In its pursuit to allow access to higher education to all students in Minnesota, the office created the Minnesota Indian Scholarship to specifically aid less fortunate students of Indian American origin.

The Minnesota Indian Scholarship award ranges between $4,000 and $6,000, granted annually to students in financial need to complete their education. Undergraduate and graduate students within the state of Minnesota are eligible to apply.

Applicants must be enrolled in accredited post-secondary institutions in Minnesota and belong to Native American tribes. Applicants must demonstrate financial need, possess above-average academic performance, and must not be in default of any state or federal student loan.

How the Minnesota Indian Scholarships is Judged

Applicants are judged based on their demonstrated financial need, as well as their ability to meet Satisfactory Academic Performance (SAP).

Why We Love the Minnesota Indian Scholarships

It’s renewable

Scholars may receive up to 10 annual awards or the equivalent in their lifetime. Undergraduate and graduate students may receive the award up to five times each.

It applies to diplomas and two-year programs

Students enrolled in two-year programs, diplomas, and certificate programs, may also apply for the scholarship, and receive the annual award up to three times.

5 Facts About Minnesota Indian Scholarships

Full-time enrollment is not required

Undergraduate students should be enrolled at least ¾ time, while graduate students should be enrolled at least ½ time.

Scholarship recipients can use the fund to study programs in any field of their choice.

It can be combined with other scholarships

The scholarship is open to students who have applied to other federal/state scholarships or grants.

It is open to non-residents of Minnesota

The scholarship is for American Indian students attending schools in Minnesota, who may or may not be residents of the state.

Have administered over $200 million in scholarships

The Office of Higher Education, through its Minnesota State Grant program, has provided need-based scholarships and grants worth more than $210 million since its inception.
