The Southeastern Theatre Conference (SETC) is one of the largest associations of theater professionals in the U.S. It connects people to opportunities and resources in theatre. It offers the Denise Halbach Performance Scholarship in honor of former SETC president and 2011 Suzanne M. Davis Memorial Award recipient.

The annual scholarship awards $2,000 to one graduate student pursuing studies in acting or musical theater performance. It is open to students who completed undergraduate studies at a university in the SETC region. The SETC region comprises the states of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia.

Applicants should submit a personal statement detailing their plans and objectives for their graduate studies. They are also to attach detailed resumes, two to three recommendation letters, and a complete transcript from all universities attended. Links to video recordings of three contrasting monologues, or two monologues and a song from musical theater, should be submitted.

Select recommenders carefully

Select recommenders who know you well and can speak to your abilities in detail. These can be college professors or direct supervisors in roles you’ve played. Ensure that you inquire about their availability and inform them early to ensure they have ample time to write and review the recommendation letter.

Select your performance pieces

The video recordings will show the judges how good you are at your craft. Select pieces that best show your strengths. Do a little practice to ensure that it comes out well. As you record, keep each piece within the two-minute limit. Ensure that the lighting and audio are good. Remember to make the links visible to anyone who has it.

Your résumé is your chance to show your experience in the performing arts. Include all projects you’ve been on and highlight the roles you played. Revamp your résumé and give it a fresh look. You could include the contacts of the recommenders in your résumé.

Write a winning essay

The personal statement is your chance to show your plans and goals for your studies. While those are the bare minimums, you should show off your uniqueness, personality, and passion for the performing arts. Create an essay outline that defines the structure of your essay and use it to craft the first draft. Revise your draft severally for clarity, coherence, and correctness. Seek feedback from a few people and incorporate it into your essay.
