The Poetry Foundation is an independent literary organization dedicated to promoting poetry. It exists to discover and celebrate the best poetry, as well as to bring it to the widest possible audience. The foundation works to increase the visibility and influence of poetry in our culture.
The Poetry Foundation also aspires to be a leader in creating a welcoming environment for poetry by cultivating new audiences, developing new modes of delivery, and encouraging new types of poetry. The Poetry Foundation was founded in 2003 with a major gift from philanthropist Ruth Lilly. It evolved from the Modern Poetry Association, which was founded in 1941 to support the publication of “Poetry Magazine”.
Ruth Lilly’s gift enabled the Poetry Foundation to expand and strengthen the presence of poetry in the United States, as well as to establish an endowment that will fund Poetry magazine in perpetuity. The Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry $25,800 Fellowships are awarded annually to deserving American poets. The award is one of the most prestigious given to American poets.
