It evolved from the Modern Poetry Association, which was founded in 1941 to support the publication of “Poetry Magazine”.

Ruth Lilly’s gift enabled the Poetry Foundation to expand and strengthen the presence of poetry in the United States, as well as to establish an endowment that will fund Poetry magazine in perpetuity. The Ruth Lilly and Dorothy Sargent Rosenberg Poetry $25,800 Fellowships are awarded annually to deserving American poets. The award is one of the most prestigious given to American poets.
