How to ace the National Honor Society Scholarship

1

Become an NHS member

If you are a high school student in 10, 11th, or 12th grade, check with the main office to see if your school has an NHS chapter. If your GPA is above a 'B' average (3.0) then you meet the academic requirements. You will also be judged on service, leadership, and character.

2

Answer a narrative question

Here's the 2018 question for example: "Describe how the four pillars of National Honor Society have shaped your development. How will you apply these pillars to your future goals?" Your answer should be 400 words or less.

3

Get recommendations

You need three letters of recommendation to accompany your essay. The first letter should be from your NHS chapter advisor, the second one should be from your principal, and the third can be from any faculty member at your school.

4

Proofread your essay

Nothing will ruin an application like a badly written essay. This means you need to spend time drafting, rewriting, and editing your work. It's a good idea to have your essay reviewed so that you can incorporate relevant feedback into your work.

How the National Honor Society Scholarship is Judged

The National Honor Society is looking for students in good standing – this is outlined on their website. They note that students who are active participants in their community through volunteering, make the most of their educational opportunities, have good leadership skills, and are hard-working, honest, and compassionate are the type of candidates they're looking for.

1

There are tons of awards being handed out

NHS is everywhere

Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in the NHS. Chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. territories, and Canada.
