The Mathworks Math Modelling Challenge or M3 Challenge is an internet-based competition organized by The Mathworks, revolving around the core concepts of applied mathematics. In this challenge, high schools can register up to two junior or senior student teams in the U.S. The winners of this intense yet enjoyable competition are awarded scholarship prizes totaling up to $100,000.

While there is a wide range of participants, only the teams with the best solution papers can receive special scholarships in tuition fees for college education. The M3 Challenge prize is equally distributed amongst team members and paid directly to the college or university of the winning students.

Six M3 Challenge finalist teams are then invited to New York to present their paper and win different prizes. Awards are as follows: M3 Challenge Champions win $20,000. M3 Challenge RunnerUp wins $15,000. M3 Challenge Third Place wins $10,000 and the M3 Challenge Finalist wins $5000. There are other awards, including technical computing and outstanding communications, which range from $500 to $3,000.

Teams are judged and their content is evaluated based on their ability to use correct mathematical models, demonstrate an in-depth understanding of solutions, and provide additional insight for outsourced solutions.
